The History
This United Reformed Church has previously
been called ‘Independent’ and
‘Congregational’, names which began to be
used in England about 1640. The former
marked the claim to a religious independence
from Bishop, Parliament and Monarch.
‘Congregational’ signified a belief that a
church should consist only of convinced
Christians, each local congregation having
Christ as its only head and its members
having the power to appoint its own ministers
and to make its own decisions.
A momentous step was taken in 1972 when
the Presbyterian Church in England and the
Congregational Church combined to form the
United Reformed Church. In 1981 the
Churches of Christ also joined in the union.
The exact date on which the Garstang church
was founded has been lost in the mists of
time but it is generally accepted to be about
1777, although non-conformists were known
to be active in this area in the 17th Century.
Our church stands as a memorial to the vision
and dedication of earlier congregations and as
a symbol of continuing worship over many
generations. In this generation we work to
spread the healing and inspiring love of God
in our own community and beyond,
recognising our own need for divine help.
